Getting workshop-ready

Our interactive workshops are open to all students in any year of study. Attending will help you develop your skills and enhance your academic technique alongside students with similar goals. This guidance outlines what to expect from these workshops, how to prepare for attending, and how to book.

What to expect

On-campus workshops are a mixture of tutor presentation and small group activities, where you'll have opportunities to chat with other students from different disciplines. The slides will be available during the session if you would like to follow along on your own device.  Slides will be emailed to you once you have booked.

Online workshops and webinars contain tutor presentation and discussion in the chat.  Microphones and cameras can be turned off and will be turned off by default in some sessions. We don't usually use breakout rooms. Online workshops are recorded and shared after the session. Slides will be emailed to you once you have booked.

Most sessions will involve a selection of the following activities:

  • Staff delivery from the front of the classroom/workshop space.
  • Hands-on research activities, for example searching StarPlus.
  • Individual work on topic based questions for example, worksheets, class examples.
  • Question and answer activities, by volunteering only (e.g. raised hands).
  • Using digital tools to respond to questions, for example Wooclap.
  • Sharing ideas on online platforms, for example polling, Blackboard chat.
  • Group or paired discussions.
  • A volunteer spokesperson summarising group discussion to the whole group.
  • Thinking independently and writing ideas on sticky notes to share.
  • A volunteer notetaker writing down ideas for the group in group activities.
  • Peer support (with consent).

The sessions will not involve:

  • Roleplay or expectation of speaking in front of class.
