301 Academic Skills Centre (301)

The 301 Academic Skills Centre provides workshops, 1:1 appointments and online resources for study skills, maths and statistics. You can read more about these services below or find out more by visiting the 301 homepage (student login required).

Study skills workshops

Study skills workshops take place on weekdays, either online or face-to-face. Workshops cover a range of key areas including academic writing, assessment and personal effectiveness and are suitable for students at any level of study and from any discipline.

1:1 Study skills tutorials

We hold daily 1:1 study skills tutorials with specialist tutors throughout the teaching period. These 30-minute appointments are designed to improve your study skills strategies and academic techniques and are suitable for students at any level of study and from any discipline.

MASH workshops

MASH workshops take place on weekdays, either online or face-to-face. Workshops cover a range of key areas including using different statistical tools and software (e.g. R, SPSS and Excel), undertaking different types of statistical tests, maths booster workshops, and maths anxiety. These workshops are suitable for students at any level of study and from any discipline.

MASH offers 1:1 tutorials with specialist tutors throughout the teaching period with either maths or statistics specialists. These appointments are suitable for students at any level of study and from any discipline.

English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC)

The ELTC provides a variety of development services to all students at all levels of study both in person and online. Specialist ELTC academic language teachers will work with you and your academic staff to provide teaching, materials and feedback for your development and academic success.

1:1 tutorials for academic writing

Writing Advisory Service (WAS) is a an opportunity for you to submit your writing and then meet with a specialist English Language teacher who will provide feedback and work with you to improve your submitted written work in areas including use and synthesis of sources, referencing, building an academic argument, finding your academic voice and appropriate tone, and being analytical and critical.

1:1 tutorials for speaking

Speaking and Language Advisory Service (SLAS) is an opportunity to work with an English Language teacher in any aspect of spoken English. Whether you have a presentation, seminar or just want feedback on your pronunciation, you can meet online for 45 minutes to develop your communication skills.

Doctoral Development Programme for PhD students

As part of the Doctoral Development Programme (DDP), we offer a series of short courses, 1 to 1 tutorials and workshops to give you the academic language and literacy skills you need in your postgraduate research degree.

Department Language Programme (DLP)

Teaching sessions designed In collaboration with academic departments and schools to build on your academic literacy and assessment literacy. Sessions are specific to modules and assessments and are delivered within or alongside your modules.

Short Courses (ELS)

Our 5-week ELS courses cover many areas to develop your academic literacy, English language and communication skills. Courses include academic reading and writing, academic speaking and listening, dissertation writing, grammar, pronunciation and general English.

Workshops (ELTCAS)

90 minute workshops on academic literacy topics where the skills you need and the language you use are tied together. Example workshops are effective paraphrasing, summarising and use of quotes, communicating information and emphasis in presentations, effective thesis statements and topic sentences, and reading academic texts effectively.

Online Resources

Our digital resources are self-study interactive workbooks on a variety of academic study skill topics. Work through them as a booklet or dip in and find practice and faculty-level examples.

The University Library

The University Library provides access to the reading for your course and research, a wide range of resources and workshops to support you with your studies, and access to several Library sites with a mix of study spaces. Specialist librarians work with your department to provide tailored support for your discipline. 

Research skills and critical thinking workshops and webinars

Our programme of research skills and critical thinking workshops and webinars run throughout the academic year. Online webinars and face to face workshops delivered in the Information Commons cover topics such as searching for information, finding and using images, creating websites using Google Sites, and using reference management software.

Digital Commons workshops and events

The Digital Commons, our new creative makerspace in the Information Commons offers drop-in sessions and workshops on a wide range of creative technologies, including 3D printing, Digital Stitchcraft, XR technologies, introductory coding, critical AI literacy and more.
