Hadi, Lecturer in the Built Environment - Department of Civil & Structural Engineering

Who are you and what is your job title?

I’m Hadi and I’m a Lecturer in the Built Environment at the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering.

 

How long have you worked at the University?

I’m originally Iranian. I came over to study architectural engineering in 2011. I’ve been working for the University since April 2019.  I really liked the department and I’ve never left.

 

What does your job involve?

I’m a Lecturer so my day-to-day job involves a bit of research, a bit of teaching, and sometimes a mix of both, where we introduce our teaching into our research and our research into our teaching.

 

What other jobs have you done at the University?

Since 2019 I've been a Postdoctoral Researcher and then a Lecturer, so I’ve been in the two different capacities as just researcher and then an academic.

 

Why do you think the University is a remarkable place to work?

For me personally, the environment at the University is such that I’ve never been made to think about whether or not I fit in and that's something I value about it.

 

How would you describe the working culture at the University?

I think of the University as like a big family.

 

What opportunities has working at the University provided you with?

The thing I really like is you get to try out different things. Projects and opportunities in different areas come along, involving many different things and different people and you get opportunities to be involved.

 

What skills/experience from your time as a student at the UoS were key to you getting your role/useful in your current role?

Having been a student here, and then having been a Research Associate and now teaching the next generation of our students, I think the best part of my experience is knowing the challenges and knowing where the process is going. It lets you better take care of the students and to be able to communicate with them what’s coming up next and let them know why things are the way they are.

 

What would you say to current students who are considering the University as a place to work?

Definitely give it a try.

 

Why did you decide to stay in Sheffield?

I had an opportunity lined up. It was a project I was really interested in and I got to stay with the group I was working very well with.
