Before you arrive

Get started with your career thinking as soon as possible. For example, the online course “Preparing for work”, designed by Study UK British Council, helps you to identify your skills, communicate these effectively to potential employers, and start building your understanding of UK organisational and workplace culture. The course is free of charge. Register on the Futurelearn platform to access the course. 


When you are in Sheffield

Join our International Careers Fast Track employability programme to accelerate your preparation for finding the job you want when you graduate - whether that is in the UK, China or another country. Fast Track students will receive a suggested programme and timeline for career preparation activities, plus the chance to take part in exclusive employer events and access to UK internship opportunities. 

Fast Track activities include: 

  • UK Internship Programme (New for 2026/27): Exclusive, paid internship opportunities specifically for international students at Sheffield to work with organisations in the UK. *To be eligible to apply, students must have participated in all mandatory elements of the Fast Track programme.
  • 1-to-1 tailored careers advice: All students can book individual appointments with our expert careers and employability advisers for guidance on career planning.
  • Visa guidance: We reduce any confusion around working rights in the UK. International students can access weekly visa drop-in sessions for answers to any visa-related queries.
  • Specialist workshops: You can attend events about Understanding the UK jobs marketWorking in the UK on a student visa, and Visa options for international students after graduation. Or, if you are looking to return to China when you graduate, there are workshops about the Chinese graduate market (delivered in Mandarin) and opportunities to hear from Chinese recruitment experts. 
  • Employer events: Our university hosts hundreds of employers each year and is a Top 20 most targeted university by the top 100 UK employers (High Fliers Research 2026). If you are looking for jobs in China, we also host international employer talks and events. 
    • Recent international employers on campus include: Tencent, Midea, and the British Council Chinese Employer Roadshow. 
    • You can also participate in the annual Asia Career Insights series, a multi-day online event with employers across Mainland China, Hong Kong, SE Asia, and India. The first two mornings are dedicated to Chinese employers and delivered entirely in Mandarin, allowing you to connect with top employers like ByteDance, Alibaba Cloud, P&G, HSBC, EY, Geely, Honor, Trip.com, and MiHoYo.
  • Access to international job platformsGlobal University Central Career Union (GUCCU) China Portal is specifically designed for University of Sheffield Chinese students in Mandarin. Planning to work in Hong Kong? We partner with Hong Kong Talent Engage to provide a one-stop support service for settling and working in the region. Plus, you can access GoinGlobal, which offers labour market information, vacancies, and recruitment advice for over 40 countries worldwide.
  • Career Mentoring: Be matched with a University of Sheffield alumni mentor who can offer insights into their role and industry. We have international alumni mentors who have built successful careers in both the UK and China.
  • Alumni talks: Attend events like "My Path: From International Student to Business Specialist" to learn from those who have walked in your shoes.

Students that complete all mandatory elements of the International Fast Track Programme will be awarded a University of Sheffield Employability Certificate.

  • Placement year: Almost every undergraduate course offers the flexibility to add a placement year, allowing you to work full-time for an organisation in the UK or another country, as an integrated part of your degree.
  • Year abroad: Study outside the UK for a year, attend an international summer school or organise your own international volunteering or work placement - a great way to explore more countries and gain new perspectives.
  • Exclusive internships: We offer a number of internship programmes exclusive to Sheffield students. These include the University of Sheffield Internship Programme which offers paid, on-campus internships working on real projects for university departments. Undergraduates interested in research careers can also access the SURE scheme which offers the opportunity to collaborate with university academics on research projects.
  • Entrepreneurship support: The university’s dedicated enterprise team, Emerge, offers you access to specialist support if you’re thinking about starting your own business, connecting you with successful business owners and industry leaders to gain firsthand insights into diverse career paths.

  • Mock Assessment Centres: Practice simulations to help you prepare for  UK graduate recruitment assessment centres.

  • Online recruitment tools: unlimited access to many specialist online career tools, including instant CV feedback, practice video interviews and a platform to practice the online aptitude tests used by top UK recruiters.

Graduation and beyond

Many universities stop helping you at graduation. At Sheffield, we offer careers support for life. As a University of Sheffield graduate, you will retain access to our Career Connect portal, digital resources, and support for as long as you need us.
