Studio In Process
Studio in Process explores design and construction methods as opportunities to build culture, connection, and resilience - as well as architecture.
Beyond what we build, can how we create our shared environment - our methods of creation - be meaningful, cared-for, and culturally valuable acts in themselves? How might valuing these processes shape the look and feel of the buildings we produce?
Built as a new-build master-plan in the 1960's, and with a new round of master-planning currently taking place, Thamesmead has served as a rich location to consider more local, participatory and iterative modes of creating architecture. Some themes which have emerged within the projects this year are: resident-led development & retro-fit, low-impact construction methods, care in repair, building as memory, design for disassembly, pleasure and joy in designing & making, temporary structures as iterative design methods, construction education & agency, non-human life & landscape as stake-holders, co-design & co-construction, and local food-growing strategies as models for resilience.
