I qualified in Medicine with Honours in 2004, subsequently undertaking specialist training in general medicine and gastroenterology that culminated in a postgraduate degree from the University of Sheffield and a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in functional gastrointestinal disorders at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. In late 2018, I was appointed Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist in Sheffield.

I have supervised 10 undergraduate BMedSci and postgraduate MD/PhD research students to thesis completion, each producing original publications in high-impact journals; several have gone on to win professional accolades, and multiple students have independently nominated me for the University of Sheffield Educational Awards. I have published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles and numerous book chapters. Reflecting my international standing in the field, I am a co-author of the British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines on the management of irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia.

I serve on the editorial board of Gastroenterology, a leading international journal in the field, and chair the Rome Partners Group, whose mission is to foster international collaboration between the Rome Foundation and early- and mid-career neurogastroenterologists.

My contributions to gastroenterology have been recognised through a number of competitive awards. In 2021, I received the United European Gastroenterology Rising Star Award, presented to outstanding early-career clinician-scientists across Europe. In 2025, I was elected a Rome Foundation Academic Fellow in recognition of sustained international achievement as a clinical academic. In 2026, the Nutrition Society awarded me the Cuthbertson Medal for excellence in clinical nutrition research, and the Rome Foundation awarded my team the Ray Clouse Award for the best scientific research paper in functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Research interests

My research interests are in functional gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia) and gluten-related disorders.
