SURE scheme

Through the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and Undergraduate Research Internship (UGRI) schemes, students receive a bursary to work over the summer with one of our research groups or with a PhD student on a research project.

Community

“I have been a member of SUMS since my first year here at Sheffield and it has been such an amazing part of my uni experience.

"We offer a range of socials throughout the year such as our annual Pi day pie dinner, lecturer vs SUMS football and netball, and the typical bar crawls for those who want to partake.

"SUMS gives you the chance to meet your fellow first year students as well as students in other years, who study a range of subjects and can offer advice. I’ve met my best friends through SUMS and it really is an honour to be the president of such a lovely society.”

Ellie McGlincy, SUMS President 2025-2026

MPS LGBTQ+ group

The MPS LGBTQ+ is a space for people in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences to explore the challenges they face or may face at university, and get together in an environment where they can be fully themselves.

MPS craft group

This small, friendly craft group provides students with the opportunity to relax, create and connect with other students. You’ll get to learn craft techniques like modular origami or crocheting hyperbolic surfaces.
