What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

So far, I have most enjoyed furthering my coding skills. During the last year I had several projects to complete for my Mathematical Investigations module that I thought were really fun and interesting. They allowed for some creativity which was nice. I also did an Undergraduate Research Internship (UGRI) where I learnt how to code a 3D animation of the Lorenz system which was great because I wouldn't have learnt that in my class. The internship was a lot of fun as I was able to research what, within the topic of non-linear differential equations, interested me. I chose to focus on coding different visuals and graphs, and learnt some very useful skills. Not to mention the UGRI project allowed me to experience what it could be like to do a PhD in maths, which is something I am working towards.

What skills have you developed during your course?

I think the skills I have improved the most during my course are my critical thinking, coding and public speaking skills. The latter was improved the most from presenting my work from the UGRI project. Here instead of presenting to 5 or 6 people with the aid of my group, I presented to a small lecture hall by myself.

What would you say to a student thinking about studying your course at Sheffield?

I would say do it. The classes in first year are very well rounded to help you see what topics you like and don't like as much; the lecturers and post-grad students are great for helping with work during office hours or drop-in sessions, and the area around the university is just lovely. Not to mention all the societies and clubs you can get involved with whilst you're studying. The department also has many opportunities for internal internships such as the UGRI and SURE schemes.
