What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

The modules available are wide ranging, and allow for the pursuit of any mathematical path, from pure to applied to statistics, and much more. The course gives you plenty of time and preparation to find out what interests you the most.

It would be remiss of me not to talk about how good the lecturers are though. They are all really friendly, and it always feels like they are genuinely trying their best to help you succeed in your mathematical career.

There are plenty of great opportunities alongside the course too. The Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) project, which I undertook over the summer, taught me a lot of mathematics that I wouldn't have found just through the regular modules, and further gave me the experience of working alongside an academic on a real problem.

What skills have you developed during your course?

My mathematical and analytical skills have definitely improved. The course also taught me plenty of relevant employable skills, like programming in Python and R, and data science techniques.

More than that though, the course has given me many opportunities to grow as a person. My interpersonal skills, my communication abilities, and my organisational skills have all improved just through navigating university life. It's something that I feel you just can't learn as effectively anywhere else.

What would you say to a student thinking about studying your course at Sheffield?

Go for it. The city is beautiful and iconic, and the people are incredibly friendly. The University is supportive, and will give you so many opportunities to let you be the best version of yourself that you can be. Your uni life will of course be driven and directed by how you want it to go, but there isn't much better than the solid foundation you can find here in Sheffield.

What are you planning to do after your degree?

In the short term, I’m interested in a job involving data, but one day I know I will want to come back and do more maths. The course has really made me feel like a mathematician at heart, and now it feels like I would be betraying myself if I didn't find some way to continue pursuing the endeavour of mathematical research and discovery in the future.
