Funding Notes
This studentship will pay home tuition fees in full and a stipend for living expenses for 3.5 years at the RCUK rate. Overseas students are welcome to apply for this studentship, but need to find other funding sources to pay the tuition difference between home and overseas students tuition fees (around £20,450 per year)

Fellowships

MAGLab also welcomes applications for fellowships, such as EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowships, the Newton Fund or through Marie-Curie Fellowships if applicable. Those wishing to work with the MAGLab as part of their fellowship should enquire at least 2 months before their funding body’s application deadline to ensure sufficient feedback and departmental approval can be sought. Those already in post please contact Dr Guan with an outline proposal for the collaborative work to be undertaken.Various fellowship schemes are listed below:

PhD student postions

All applications for PhD study should be made through the University system; please contact Dr Guan and attach your C.V. for an informal discussion before applying, explaining why you want to join the MAGLab and which research work of our group that you are really excited. This must be done at least 6 weeks before the deadline of any scholarship scheme or offer. Otherwise, your application may be refused without any response from Dr Guan.
1. The University of Sheffield offers limited (and competitively funded) financial support for overseas PhD applications – options include:
- University of Sheffield Research Scholarships (UK/EU, Overseas students)
- Alumni Rewards (a 10% discount on tuition fees (capped at £1,500)) (UK/EU, Overseas students).
- A Sheffield-CSC award is available for China Mainland applicants only
- Other external sources of PGR funding
2. MSE department offers projects for the Advanced Metallic SystemsDoctoral Training. MAGLab group can only accommodate CDT students from September 2021 (UK/EU students. EU students have to be resident in the UK for 3 years)
3. Around September 2022 , MAGLab will have one funded UK/EU PhD studentship (including home tuition fee and RCUK rate stipend £15009 every year ). However, the overseas students can also apply for this scholarship scheme if they can pay the tuition difference between home and overseas students. Because female and BAME (Black, Asian and Other Minority Ethnic) students remain severely underrepresented in engineering, students from these community will be more than welcomed to apply for this studentship.
4. MAGLab also supports 1 Self-funded PhD student with sufficient experimental resources in 2022-2023, please contact after March 2022 if you want to start from September 2022
Note:
1. If you apply for CSC, you can only work on the following research areas:
- Secure, clean and efficient energy (Already have a proposal draft for this research theme)
- Smart, green and integrated transport
- Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw material
2. If you choose the category 3, you can only conduct Mg or microstructure characterisation related research projects.
3. MAGLab has the budget to provide 1 high spec PC and 1 ordinary PC in the first two years(First come first served)

Visiting postgraduate students

If you wish to visit MAGLab and spend time researching with us, please note that the University has now implemented a strict policy available online. Fees for visiting students are charged pro rata of the standard Sheffield fee (Home or Overseas as appropriate). First 3 months will be tuition free. For example, if you study for three months, no tuition fee will be incurred. If you study for six months you will be charged for three month tuition fee.

Visiting Scholars

MAGLab also can accommodate 1-2 visiting scholars every year if the visiting scholars can secure funds to cover living/travel/insurance and bench cost (around £1000), MAGLab also has limited fund to support research cost for Visiting Scholars.
