After completing my undergraduate degree in Mass Communication from Forman Christian College University, Lahore, specialising in print and electronic media, I wanted to study Global Journalism to better understand how media operates across different political and cultural contexts. The University of Sheffield stood out to me because of its strong academic reputation and its emphasis on critical thinking and high-quality journalism. The diverse international community and global perspective of the programme made it the ideal place to grow both professionally and personally.

How the Global Journalism MA has helped me develop

What I have enjoyed most about my course is the opportunity to engage deeply with global journalism and participate in International Journalism Week 2025, where I won the quiz.

During the course, I have strengthened my journalistic research, media analysis, and writing skills. The modules have deepened my understanding of media structures, journalism in Britain, and digital media trends. I have also enhanced my critical thinking and communication abilities while learning how to navigate complex media environments. Working with diverse classmates and receiving guidance from experienced lecturers has further broadened my perspective and prepared me to report responsibly and effectively in a global context. The guidance of Dani Madrid-Morales, our course lead, has been invaluable in shaping my learning journey.

Where I hope my degree will take me

My long-term goal is to become an investigative journalist focusing on public-interest reporting, highlighting underreported issues and promoting accountability. This degree equips me with a global perspective on media, strengthens my journalistic research and writing skills, and provides the knowledge and confidence to navigate complex media environments. It also allows me to build a professional network and expertise that will support impactful, high-quality journalism throughout my career.

What I have loved about studying in Sheffield

I have really enjoyed the vibrant and supportive environment at the University of Sheffield. The wide range of societies here has given me the chance to explore the UK, from different towns and cities to the stunning Peak District, with trips happening almost every Saturday. Since my first week, these excursions have helped me discover new places, enjoy nature, and meet students from diverse backgrounds.

I am also proud to serve as a student ambassador at the University of Sheffield, sharing my experiences and supporting prospective students.

Sheffield itself is a fantastic city, combining cultural life with easy access to the outdoors. The mix of excellent academic support, active societies, and opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside has made my experience both rewarding and unforgettable.
