Your career

At the School of Information, Journalism and Communication we are committed to supporting our students to develop the skills that lead to successful careers.

Careers support

We work closely with the University’s Careers and Employability Service and our Faculty’s own employability and placements hub, the Cornerstone, which is open for student drop-ins from 10AM-3PM weekdays and can help you through questions relating to employability, such as how to find placement years and write good applications.

Journalism students can also benefit from our journalism careers days, where media industry insiders visit the School to deliver guest lectures and career-focussed workshops. As well as receiving career insights, students gain a valuable chance to start building professional networks before graduation.

Placements

It's easy for us to say how good we are at securing industry experience for you - so why not hear from our students first-hand? Follow Natalie, Ella and Gana through a typical day during their Easter work placements, which were arranged through our department employability experts this year.

Accreditation

Graduates from our Journalism programmes will benefit from a degree accredited by both the NCTJ and the Professional Publishers Association. These accreditations are recognised by employers as a guarantee of high standards of teaching and practical experience.

Our masters courses in Data Science, Information Management, Information Systems and Librarianship are all accredited by CILIP, the UK’s library and information association. This rigorous assessment ensures that these courses cover the essential skills and knowledge and offer the best possible preparation for professional practice.

Links with industry

We are always developing our links with industry leaders and potential employers in the fields of information management and journalism. This gives us insights into exactly the skills that employers are looking for, so we can shape the practical content of your degree to meet their needs and yours.

Graduate destinations

Our graduates are highly employable and have gone on to careers in many notable organisations. For our data science graduates these include the House of Commons Library, the BBC, Health Improvement Scotland, HSBC, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and higher education institutions around the world.

Our journalism graduates have found employment in organisations including the BBC, Bloomberg, the Press Association, a range of national magazines, local television and radio, regional newspapers and high-profile national titles such as the Daily Mail and the Guardian.
