Since graduating from University of Sheffield, my career has focused on public impact, policy and innovation. I manage an accredited Malaysian social enterprise focused on talent development, employability and inclusive economic empowerment. I lead strategy, partnerships and programme delivery across initiatives in AI upskilling, youth employability and community entrepreneurship.
How my studies helped my career
My time at University of Sheffield equipped me with more than academic knowledge. It strengthened my ability to think critically, communicate clearly and approach complex issues with empathy and evidence. The programme encouraged debate, fresh perspectives and practical problem-solving, which shaped how I lead teams and build partnerships today.
The international environment also taught me how to work with people from different backgrounds and viewpoints. That has been especially valuable in my current role at Pepper Labs, where success depends on bringing together government, industry and communities to create meaningful social impact.

The course was engaging and relevant and I was also fortunate to learn from supportive lecturers who encouraged independent thinking and meaningful discussion. Their guidance helped me grow intellectually and gave me greater confidence in my own voice and perspective.
University life outside of studies
While I was not heavily involved in formal societies or organised activities, I gained a great deal from the informal side of university life. Spending time with students from different countries and backgrounds exposed me to new perspectives, cultures and ways of thinking. Those interactions enriched my overall experience and helped me become more open-minded, adaptable and culturally aware.
Beyond campus, Sheffield itself left a lasting impression on me. It is a warm, welcoming city with a strong sense of community. At an important stage in my life, it gave me both space to reflect and the motivation to move forward. My time living at Endcliffe was another memorable part of the experience. Being so close to the Sheffield Botanical Gardens and surrounded by greenery made the environment feel calm, homely and therapeutic.
My advice to future students
Stay open to careers that may not follow a straight line. My own journey moved across public service, communications, policy and social entrepreneurship, and each chapter built skills I use today. Be willing to start where you can, not only where you ideally want to be. Meaningful careers are often built through experience, consistency and relationships over time. Most importantly, choose work that connects ability with purpose. Success is more sustainable when your work improves lives beyond your own.
