I loved my time at the Uni of Sheffield, I made friends for life and learned from some of the best lecturers in the country
Can you tell us about your career since graduating?
After undertaking a couple of freelance roles, I joined Newsquest in January 2025 and have recently celebrated a year in the role. My job entails turning press releases and community news for Newsquest's titles in Somerset into news articles for its newspapers and websites with the help of AI, allowing for articles to be created at a faster pace, ultimately increasing output.
I am also currently on the Executive Board of the Forum for European Journalism Students, which is a group for student and young journalists across Europe. We meet twice a year to network, listen to guest speakers on a particular topic and explore the history and culture of our host city, which is voted for by attendees at previous events.
Did you get involved in any additional studies or activities during your time at the university?
Alongside my Master's degree, we worked towards the NCTJ Level 5 Diploma. This is a well-recognised award within the field of journalism, and so to earn that alongside my degree was incredibly efficient and a big reason for applying to Sheffield in the first place.
Can you tell us about your experience during the Journalism MA and how it has prepared you for your career?
My experience gave me an incredible insight into the world of journalism, including media law, newsrooms in action, ethics and more. It also gave me opportunities to gain valuable experience during placements at prestigious media outlets, which has boosted my CV.Jack Roberts

What advice do you have for future students?
Network, network, network. You really don't know how these connections could help you later. It's cliché to say "it's not just what you know but who you know", but I can confirm it's true!
International postgraduate taught scholarships
We're offering scholarships worth up to £3,000 to international students joining the University to study a taught masters programme in September 2026.
