The Sheffield Methods Institute (SMI) was set up as a response to how changes in contemporary society have impacted the social sciences and is part of the School of Education.
Induction sessions for new BA Social Sciences and MA Social Research students
To get to know you a little better and to welcome you to the School of Education, each year we hold a number of events for new students.
Welcome week is your chance to get to know the School, the University and the City. There will be lots going on throughout the week across campus, but we really encourage you to attend all the events taking place for School of Education students.
You’ll see details of these in your timetable, visible once you have activated your student account as part of your pre-registration tasks.

It's really important you attend your course specific induction session, as you'll start off your first semester with us, meet your Academic Tutor/School of Education Staff and your new fellow students.

Module Choice Guide 2026/27 - PLEASE ACTION
All SMI undergraduate and postgraduate students make optional module choices as part of their degrees. You'll be asked to make your choices during phase 2 of the registration process.
Please visit your Module Choice Guide before you submit your modules choices online for the BA Social Sciences and MA Social Research courses.

You can access the system via your MUSE account - Log in to MUSE and click on the myServices tab, then click on Online Module Choice. Please note you must have completed Phase 1 of the registration process and have a University of Sheffield IT account in order to access MUSE.
