- Profile
-
Since 2010 I have worked in Lifelong Learning at the University, firstly leading the BSc Natural and Human Environments and the Cert HE Archaeology, before leading the Lifelong Learning foundation years from 2014-2025.
In this time, I’ve led the expansion of our mature student foundation year from an initial cohort of 25 students to 130-150 across 42 different degree programmes, including pathways to the accredited degrees in Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Orthoptics and Landscape Architecture.
I’m a passionate advocate of widening access, and ensuring that with support and compassion all able students can succeed at University, regardless of their background. I have taken this approach to both my teaching and my role leading admissions to all of our pathways.
I have a particular interest in supporting sanctuary applicants, and sit on the Institution’s University of Sanctuary Action Group, ensuring that all forced migrant applicants to the University are considered for our Lifelong Learning programmes if it’s the right next step for them.
I hold a BSc in Environmental Archaeology (Edinburgh), an MA in Landscape Archaeology (Sheffield) and a PhD in Biodiversity Management. I first joined the University of Sheffield in 2009 as a Research Associate in the School of Law.
- Research interests
-
I am an interdisciplinary researcher, I have experience of researching in a variety of fields, including landscape archaeology and anthropology and survey methodology. Central to all of these is a theme of understanding the values which people hold for the world and society which surrounds them, and the development of methods for understanding this.
I am also passionate about communicating research and scholarship to a wider audience, and have held funded events linked to both my research and DLL’s curriculum. These include:
- ESRC Festival of Social Science 2010 ‘Fear and Loathing in Sheffield’
- ESRC Festival of Social Science 2011 ‘The Museum of Rock’
- ESRC Festival of Social Science 2012 ‘Here be Dragons, Mapping a University Landscape’
- ESRC Festival of Social Science 2014 ‘The Museum of Me’
- Teaching activities
-
I have taught on a variety of degree and foundation level modules, on subjects ranging from Introduction to the Humanities through to Research Methods. I currently lead the ‘Foundations of Geography’ module, and teach on Academic Literacy and Communication Skills and Maths and Stats.
In my teaching, I aim to support students to develop their curiosity and confidence, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to succeed on their chosen subject.
- Professional activities and memberships
-
I am a member of the Foundation Year Network, serving as a member of the Executive and Communications lead from 2019-2025. I’ve held external examiner positions for a number of institutions, and am currently External Examiner for Cardiff’s Lifelong Learning Centre Science provision.
