Profile: I am a sociologist with research interests in health and illness, personal relationships and qualitative methods. I am currently a Research Associate on the Narrative Stream of Cripping Breath, a project on the new cultural politics of respiration, funded by a Wellcome Discovery Award. In my role on Cripping Breath, I am co-producing qualitative research on the lived experience of ventilation with a group of community researchers, involving online interviews and photographic storytelling.
Previously, I worked at the School of Clinical Dentistry as a Research Associate on a range of projects, including Significance of the Mouth in Older Age (funded by GlaxoSmithKline) and the clinical trials MAGIC, SCRIPT, PIP and CALM (funded by NIHR).
I have taught on a range of sociology and research methods modules, as well as being the deputy module lead on Health Promotion (HAR6021). I have also been on the supervisory teams for masters students in the School of Clinical Dentistry.
I am also interested in emotionally demanding research, and the ways researchers in this area are supported. I am co-chair of the Emotionally Demanding Research Network, an internal researcher-led network that aims to promote a supportive environment for researchers doing this kind of work. I am relatively new to research on sensitive topics, and I am particularly interested in how people come to emotionally demanding research, particularly peer and community researchers working on projects related to their lived experience in academic settings.

Research interests: My research interests are broadly related to health and illness, disability, personal relationships and the life course. My work to date has been varied, and primarily qualitative, exploring aspects of people's everyday lives and the narratives they construct. I am particularly interested in narrative accounts of aspects of health and illness, and the practices that constitute various personal relationships. Methodologically, I am interested in creative qualitative approaches, and developing accessible, flexible and inclusive ways of co-researching.
