Research interests

My research interests are around narrative methods in Educational Psychology, the use of narrative in research, the boundaries between theory and practice and the everyday complexities of applying psychology in a social context.

Within these broad interests my research has focussed on how Educational Psychology might claim and demonstrate an emancipatory purpose, through assessments and interventions that focus explicitly upon collaborative consciousness raising and advocacy.

I am interested in how the 'therapeutic' purpose might be played out in this way within the contexts within which Educational Psychologists work, with parents and in schools. In particular I am experienced in working with parents to improve their relationships with their children and with adults in schools supporting children who have experienced relationship trauma.

I have recently begun to engage at a philosophical level with the some of the dilemmas and possibilities practice raises, in particular, phenomenological and existential conceptions of self-other.

Teaching activities

I was appointed in September 2012 to teach part-time (0.4) on the three-year doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology programme as an associate tutor on secondment from Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council.

Professional activities and memberships

I have worked as an educational psychologist since September 2003. Previous to this I worked as a teacher in a Behaviour Support Team, and in a range of special schools. I was trained as a secondary English teacher and taught in a mainstream secondary school for three years after qualifying as a teacher. After university, I spent a year teaching English in Spain.

I am a member of the Association of Educational Psychologists.
