Tanu Shree decided to study at The University of Sheffield due to it's very high scope with cloud computing adapted across many big industries. Now a Senior Security Researcher at Microsoft, she uses the skills from her MSc daily, securing major firms from cyber attacks and identify potential threats!

Can you describe a typical day within your role?

My typical day can vary, but it normally consists of the following responsibilities/tasks:

  • Cyber Compromise - Conducting experiments and deep research to understand and identify potential vulnerabilities.
  • Fraud - Diagnose potential fraud and work with a range of teams to create effective detection strategies.
  • Abuse Investigation and Research - Keeping up with and analysing the latest trends and development of scam and phishing campaigns.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your current role or your greatest career achievement so far?

There have been many rewarding aspects within my role, but the main one is securing big firms from high value cyber attacks!

What skills/qualifications from your degree or other training do you make use of in your job?

I use lots of skills from my degree! These include forensics, cryptography, and exploratory data analysis.

Why did you choose to study at Sheffield rather than another institution?

It has a very high scope with cloud computing adapted across many big industries, which was a positive factor in my decision to study at Sheffield.

What were the best things about studying in the School?

The best things were the practical knowledge I learned, the collaborative projects I was able to be involved in, and the student-teacher interactions.

If you could give one piece of advice to current students or recent graduates, what would it be?

Try to be proactive in terms of getting the job, connect with Alumni and focus on studies. Plus, take help from university career help, those are the best people!
