Dr Xianyuan Liu is an Academic Fellow in Multimodal AI in the Machine Learning group, School of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield. He also serves as Assistant Head of AI Research Engineering at the Centre for Machine Intelligence. His research focuses on multimodal AI for scientific discovery. He is the principal developer of PyKale, a PyTorch-based framework for multimodal learning.

Xianyuan received his PhD from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023 and his BEng from Southeast University in 2016, China. He worked as a Senior AI Research Engineer at the Centre for Machine Intelligence from 2023 to 2026.

Research interests

His research focuses on developing machine learning methods and tools for multimodal learning, with applications in materials design and drug discovery. He develops multimodal AI models that integrate computational and experimental data to improve property prediction and accelerate scientific discovery. His work also explores the use of multimodal AI to construct new datasets and benchmarks for materials and protein research.
