Computer Science Lecturer Recognised as ELLIS Scholar

Dr. Chen (Cherise) Chen has been recently elected an ELLIS Scholar in the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) under the Robust Machine Learning program.

Dr Chen Chen

This prestigious honour highlights her contributions to advancing robust machine learning research and its applications, particularly in healthcare.

ELLIS is a leading initiative inspired by the Canadian LMB CIFAR model, focusing on machine learning research and fostering collaboration through Fellowship Programs. These programs bring together experts to explore shared research themes via workshops and joint efforts. Currently, ELLIS connects 43 sites across 17 countries, uniting European excellence in machine learning and emphasizing fundamental science, technical innovation, and societal impact. ELLIS Fellows and Scholars are distinguished scientists within the European Machine Learning/AI community. They are selected after a rigorous peer-review process for their contributions to the field and their role as ambassadors of ELLIS, promoting data-driven AI research in Europe.

Dr. Chen, a Lecturer in Computer Vision at the School of Computer Science, is a member of the Insigneo Institute, and a member of the Centre for Machine Intelligence community. Following her election as an ELLIS Scholar, she will join the ELLIS Robust Machine Learning program, serving as an ambassador for the ELLIS network and as an advisor eligible to co-supervise ELLIS PhD students together with other renowned ELLIS fellows and scholars.

Reflecting on her new role, Dr. Chen said: "I am thrilled to join the ELLIS family as an ELLIS Scholar in the Robust Machine Learning group. This opportunity allows me to deepen my contributions to robust AI for healthcare applications within a distinguished community of European excellence. As part of the ELLIS network, I am keen to advance trustworthy AI systems capable of understanding complex healthcare data and empowering clinicians with robust, explainable and timely insights, ultimately improving global healthcare quality and decision-making. I eagerly look forward to collaborating with fellow ELLIS members to collectively shape the future of AI in Europe and beyond."

Congratulations to Dr. Chen on this fantastic achievement!
