Celebrating our 2024 Computer Science Graduates and Prize Winners

Last week, we celebrated the graduation ceremony of our undergraduates, followed by a reception in the Firth Court courtyard, during which Professor Roger Moore handed out prizes to our top-achieving students.

The Prize Winners

The Alasdair Thomson Prize - this prize is awarded once annually in memory of Alasdair Thomson, a graduate of the School of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield. It is awarded for the best performance in the Level 1 Programming module to students studying an Undergraduate degree programme in the School of Computer Science. This year, it was won by Jason Kambites and Richard Tomblin

For the Sir Harold West Award for academic and personal promise displayed during Level 1, James Blackburn was this year’s winner.

The Freshgate Trust Foundation prize for academic and personal promise at Level 1 shown by students from Sheffield and the region was awarded to Luke Cavin.

The British Computer Society Eliot Chiat Prize – made available through the British Computer Society in memory of the late Eliot Chiat, who was a member of the Computing Services at the University of Sheffield, and also a long-time Secretary for the South Yorkshire branch of the British Computer Society. Awarded for best overall performance at Level 2 to Benjamin Magill.

The Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association Hatfield Memorial Prize in Engineering for performance in the Level 2 examination was also awarded to Benjamin Magill.

The Certinia Prize is awarded to the most outstanding undergraduate dissertation project on the topic of cloud computing. The 2024 prize was awarded to Ana Camarasan.

The Douglas Lewin Memorial Prize - made available through donations from the Universities of Brunel, East Anglia, Sheffield and Southampton in memory of the late Professor Douglas Lewin who, at each University, made significant academic contributions in the field of Electronics and Computer Science. It is available to level 3 or level 4 students, and was awarded for 'Best Examination performance' this year to Kush Barakhada and Jessica Leatherland.

The Mappin Medal and Premium - through the generosity of the late Sir Frederick Mappin, the Mappin Medal and is awarded for 'Greatest Distinction shown by final year candidates’ and was awarded to Peter Scott.

Congratulations to Professor Moore who won our Best Teacher of the Year award.

Huge congratulations to all of our amazing students, we are looking forward to hearing about the inspiring and exciting things you go on to do after graduating. Thank you to the staff in charge of organising the graduation celebrations for making sure that our students and their families had a memorable day.
