Profile

I am a Professor in Social Work and Gender-based Violence and my practice experience spans 30+ years in a range of public and voluntary sector settings. My portfolio of research and publications contributes to the fields of gender-based and interpersonal violence, equalities and diversity, and children's social care, with an emphasis on the experiences of marginalised communities, help-seeking and access to services.  Highlighting my strong commitment to linking practice and academia, I am the Strategic Lead for the Practitioner-Led Research Programme of the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Specialist Centre for Social Care; a national centre which was established to support and build capacity in social care research.

Professional activities and memberships

I am a registered social worker (reg no. SW85402) and maintain strong links with practice through membership of BASW and as co-editor of BASW’s journal, Practice: Social Work in Action. In addition, I am the Chair of the Domestic Violence and Violence Special Group for the UK-wide Association of Child Protection Professionals. I am a member of our regional South Yorkshire Teaching Partnership and I developed and lead the Social Work Online Team Training (SWOTT) Toolkits project; a CPD resource for the health and social care sector.

Partnerships, engagement and impact

I have a strong commitment to knowledge mobilisation and practice-relevant research, and the SWOTT Toolkits project is an example this. In 2021-22 SWOTT Toolkits were piloted in South Yorkshire via a proof-of-concept study, funded by the Department for Education. Subsequently, the SWOTT Toolkits – a team-based approach to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) – has grown from strength-to-strength and now has subscribers from across England and Scotland including local authorities and other health and care providers. Each themed toolkit offers practitioners the opportunity for evidenced-informed learning on topical and pressing issues relevant to a range of health and social care settings. Toolkit creation offers social care researchers a knowledge mobilisation vehicle and immediate reach to a practice audience.
