Meet Holly, an Advanced Practitioner Fellow at the Yorkshire & Humber ADPH, where she leads regional work on improving outcomes for children and young people. A proud University of Sheffield MPH graduate, she combines research, policy, and collaboration to drive meaningful change in public health.
Please give a brief overview of your career path since graduation and your current role/responsibilities?
Since completing my MPH, I have started an advanced development fellowship with the Yorkshire & Humber ADPH leading on their priority ambition for children and young people. I have been conducting research, building an evidence base, connecting with stakeholders, developing resources, and steering policy at a regional level.
In what way did your experience at University of Sheffield prepare you for your current career?
It gave me the confidence in my Public Health knowledge and abilities to pursue advanced career opportunities that I previously would have been too cautious to pursue.

Did you take advantage of any opportunities whilst at the University of Sheffield and how did these enhance your student experience?
I was a Student Rep for both years of my MPH and I really enjoyed engaging with my peers on my course, gathering their views, and making a difference to how the course is managed for future cohorts.

The tutors were all great - very knowledgeable, attentive, and approachable. The flexibility of distance learning also really helped me to manage the degree alongside working full-time.

What advice would you give to students interested in pursuing a similar career to you?
Public Health is very broad - you don't need to have the words "Public Health" in your job title to be doing Public Health! Knowledge is important but work experience is where you develop your skills - working part-time or volunteering during your degree will really help you to excel in future job applications. Understanding the PH key skills framework will help you to apply learning for your work experience to future PH jobs.
