Dr Sarah Bates is a Research Fellow in Public Health Economic Modelling at SCHARR. She specialises in health economic evaluation of complex public health interventions, with expertise in obesity, behavioural health and mental health policy, most recently focussed on school-based interventions for young people's mental health. Her work integrates methods from public health, health psychology, economics, and decision science to improve understanding of how interventions influence long-term health and cost-effectiveness outcomes.
Prior to this role, Sarah completed a Wellcome Trust-funded PhD in Public Health, Economics and Decision Science, investigating how psychological mechanisms of behaviour change can be incorporated into a health economic model of obesity.
Alongside her research, Sarah is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has extensive teaching and supervision experience across public health, health economics, epidemiology, statistics, health psychology, and data science. She is currently supervising MSc, and PhD students and has supported the development of both in-person and online learning programmes.

Research interests include decision-analytic modelling for complex public health decision-making, with a focus on capturing the relationships between interventions, behavioural mechanisms, physical health outcomes, and mental health outcomes.
