Profile

Professor Deepak Parashar is the Academic Lead for Clinical Trials in Oncology and Professor of Medical Statistics at the Sheffield Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) within the School of Medicine and Population Health at University of Sheffield. He holds BSc (Honours) and MSc Physics from University of Delhi, Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics from Cambridge, and a PhD in Mathematics from Aberdeen. His early career spanned postdoctoral positions in Leipzig (fellowship of Max Planck Society), Swansea (fellowship of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851), Rome (an EU programme and fellowship of the European Science Foundation), Assistant Professor in Mathematics at University of Warwick, and visiting scientist at Max Planck Institute fur Mathematik in Bonn.

His research interests are at the interface of mathematics, statistics, cancer research and artificial intelligence. With a PhD in quantum groups and noncommutative geometry, Professor Parashar’s statistical research comprises of methodological as well as applied themes. He has been the lead statistician on numerous real-world clinical studies, clinical trials in cancer, with extensive statistical work on NHS datasets for survival studies. He has developed statistical methodology for personalised medicine in cancer, in particular, biomarker-guided adaptive designs, master protocols, addressing issues such as type 1 error control and treatment heterogeneity. His current research uses real-world evidence in clinical trials, subgroup identification methods and novel trial designs, and geometric representations of multidimensional clinical trial data. His recent work on Artificial Intelligence spans personalized uncertainty quantification, multimodal AI prediction, and multimodal AI assurance.

Professor Parashar’s recent appointments include being Deputy Lead for the Turing-Roche partnership at The Alan Turing Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Turing Fellow, Associate Professor of Systems Biology and Oncology at University of Warwick and co-lead for Cancer Trials at the Warwick Cancer Research Centre, Senior Statistician at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, MRC Biostatistics Unit, and the Cambridge Cancer Trials Centre.

A recognised bridge between academia and industry, Professor Parashar advises on statistical strategy, Health AI, and precision medicine across the full drug development lifecycle, and has served on review panels for MRC, UKRI, Yorkshire Cancer Research, and the European Research Agency.

Professor Parashar holds a Visting Professorship of Biostatistics at Georgetown University in Washington DC where he has active collaboration on evolutionary guided precision medicine for cancer.
