Everything I was doing on my placement was for my own benefit and experience

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?
My course has given me lots of transferable skills throughout my first two years, my placement and now my final year project. Each year has been completely different, challenging in different ways but also satisfying when I overcome and develop myself because of these hurdles. The course has been fun because of the varied days (lectures/ labs/ tutorials/ workshops). Another great highlight has been a really great group of friends that have always been a good support network when the course has had its challenges!
What did you do for your placement year?
I worked for EDF Energy at an operating Nuclear Power Plant, Sizewell B, as the Chemistry Industrial Placement student. I primarily worked on my project, which was to determine a method for concentration of a buffer chemical. I also completed smaller projects throughout the year, completed lab routines and got experience in different groups around the power station.
What were the best things about your placement?
The workday was really varied, as I was independent and planned my own time. The placement felt like everything I was doing was for my own benefit and experience, and the people were all very friendly and helpful.
What would you say to a student thinking about studying your course at Sheffield?
I would highly recommend it to those with interest in chemistry or those who are not sure what they want to do after uni, as you can use chemistry in a lot of different career paths! But I would say it is a difficult degree and so make sure you are prepared to put in a lot of work!
