Chloe Ju Xian Low
MSc Creative and Cultural Industries Management
Member of the Dean's List, class of 2023
Contributing to society
Chloe demonstrated a genuine passion for helping others and truly embraced opportunities to support her community whilst at Sheffield. As a Student Ambassador in the Management School, she contributed her student profile to the website to share her experience of her degree programme with prospective students. She co-led the production of a promotional video to showcase the School’s facilities and student support, improving her employable skills whilst representing the University.
In support of her fellow classmates Chloe volunteered as a Student Academic Representative for her programme, and she was keen to take an inclusive and proactive approach to the role. This was highlighted when there were personal disputes during group work and she took the initiative to act as an intermediary, facilitating communication between a student and lecturer to help find a resolution.
While volunteering at local non-profit, Yorkshire Artspace, Chloe participated in the organisation’s annual ‘Open Studios’ event for a weekend as a front-of-house representative. She enthusiastically greeted over 100 participating artists and crafts-people in Sheffield city centre and took visitor surveys to collect feedback about the event, allowing her to expand her horizons and immerse herself in Sheffield’s arts and culture scene.
Connecting learning with practice
Chloe proactively sought exposure to the world of work during her studies here. To maximise her UK career prospects, she participated in two events on the topic of working in the UK after graduation, as part of International Careers Week.
Having struggled with anxiety on the approach to the dissertation period, Chloe enrolled in two optional dissertation workshops over the summer to grow her confidence. After realising the importance of having strong written English skills to meet her goals, she attended additional ‘Writing Advisory’ classes with the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC). The ‘Writing Advisory’ classes improved her academic performance by enhancing her skills, helped alleviate her concerns about the dissertation-writing process and gave her an overall boost of self-confidence.
Following an intensive application process, Chloe successfully obtained and completed a company project dissertation working on a real-world project and submitting a business report for The Children’s Media Conference. She gained valuable insight into the media and arts industry and the events planning process, allowing her to apply concepts learnt in the classroom within a practical environment.
Chloe impressed The Children’s Media Conference organisation with her project and she then volunteered for additional roles during the conference event itself. In a front-of-house role during their logistically-complicated ‘Speed Meetings’, she managed delegate queues and ensured time slots were correctly allocated, further developing her time management and interpersonal skills. Chloe’s company project supervisor complimented her as being “highly employable”, and emphasised her strengths in teamwork, managing conflict and negotiation.
