On Saturday 11 July NVIDIA delivered the “Building Practical AI Agents Using Claw: Hands-On Workshop” at The Diamond, sponsored by the Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI), University of Sheffield Research Software Engineering (RSE), and the N8 Research Partnership.

The collaborative, one-day public event focused on introducing participants to AI agent frameworks through practical development, drawing in researchers, students, and technical experts from across the University and region to examine systems capable of using tools, files, APIs, and models to automate complex workflows.

From Theory to Prototype

The morning session included an opening talk on practical AI agents and a guided technical setup. Supported by NVIDIA, participants received NVIDIA Brev credits to access cloud development environments instantly, bypassing local installation barriers.

Key technical topics covered included:

  • The role of tool-using workflows in research and operations.
  • Practical agent deployment using the OpenClaw ecosystem.
  • Developing safer agent frameworks with NVIDIA NemoClaw and OpenShell.

Collaborative Use Cases

Following a networking lunch, attendees formed cross-disciplinary teams for an open development session. Teams designed prototypes tailored to specific workflows, including research automation, educational tools, operational efficiency, and digital accessibility. The workshop concluded with a "Show and Tell" session.

The Centre for Machine Intelligence and the RSE team thank NVIDIA, the N8 consortium, and all attendees for a highly collaborative and productive workshop.
