The Centre for Machine Intelligence Strategy 2026

CMI Strategy Cover
On

The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) Strategy 2026 outlines our plan to advance artificial intelligence while championing responsible, human-centric development.

The strategy outlines how the Centre will bridge the gap between technical AI breakthroughs and ethical, societal, and practical questions.

With a mission to ‘forge AI research, education, innovation, and training, for the benefit of society’, the strategy leverages Sheffield's cross-disciplinary expertise to tackle pressing technological and social challenges across the following core activity areas:

  • Development of Open Source AI Software and Resources
  • Human-Centric AI in Society and Culture (addressing ethics, bias, and inequalities)
  • AI-Enabled Research (including Secure Data Environments)
  • AI for Engineering and Manufacturing (including advanced materials)
  • Physical AI and Robotics

Our Four Strategic Areas

The CMI Strategy 2026 closely aligns with the University's broader strategy, dividing its key action plans into four primary areas:

1. Research: Pushing Boundaries Responsibly

  • Democratising access to cutting-edge AI technology, tools, and datasets while strictly adhering to UKRI’s Principles of Responsible and Trustworthy AI.
  • Launching an internal 'AI Sandbox' to showcase and share in-house AI technologies and datasets for university researchers.
  • Embedding social sciences and humanities perspectives into all CMI projects to ensure technical systems are ethically sound.
  • Supporting Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and facilitating cross-disciplinary connections to increase large-scale grant success.

2. Innovation: Translating Research into Real-World Outcomes

  • Boosting the pipeline of AI-enabled spinout companies by providing specialised training and resources to cohorts from undergraduate to professor level.
  • Deepening strategic alliances with regional policymakers, local government, and industry partners to foster knowledge exchange and high-impact policy contributions.

3. Education: Shaping the Next Generation of AI Leaders

  • Integrating research-based, AI-positive pedagogy across both academic and vocational university pathways to build critical AI literacy.
  • Expanding student opportunities by pairing programmes with external expert guest lecturers and creating AI-focused student placement roles.

4. One University: Building a Sustainable, Collaborative Community

  • Driving "Green AI" initiatives by facilitating transparent conversations about the environmental costs of scaling AI, while exploring how machine intelligence can improve the University’s own sustainability goals.
  • Fostering a cohesive internal ecosystem through regular cross-faculty community events and specialised Interest Groups.

Looking Ahead

By combining technical excellence with a deep understanding of societal impact, the University of Sheffield is ensuring that the AI of tomorrow is built on a foundation of integrity, sustainability, and collaborative excellence.
