- Profile

Leanna graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2020 with an MEng (Hons) degree in Structural Engineering with Architectural Studies. During her studies, she gained an interest in the importance of sustainable concrete practices and began her PhD under the supervision of Dr Andrew Liew and Professor Matthew Gilbert. This research primarily investigated the optimisation of steel plate reinforcement for concrete flat slabs, from analytical, numerical and experimental standpoints. After completing her PhD in 2025, Leanna is now a postdoctoral research associate, investigating the additional space that could be provided through more intensive use, change of use and vertical extension of existing buildings. This work will also be integrated with other work on the BuildZero programme, to provide national insights for the UK building stock.
