Wull Technologies has launched CASA (Collaboration Advancing Sustainable Acoustics) supported by the Henry Royce Institute’s Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP).

With growing urban density and lightweight construction, demand for soundproofing is rising. Yet the sector is dominated by oil-derived foams and energy-intensive mineral wool, materials with high embodied carbon and poor recyclability.

Wull Technologies is addressing this with LAMDA, a rigid, recyclable acoustic panel made from British sheep wool. Its structure enables uses from wall panels and baffles to motorway noise barriers, combining performance with circular design.

Commercialising new materials is difficult: each application requires expensive prototyping, testing, and certification. CASA tackles this by pairing industrial innovation with academic expertise.

Professor Kirill V. Horoshenkov, Dr. James Maguire and Dr. Anton Krynkin from the School of Mechanical, Aerospace & Civil Engineering, will apply advanced mechano-acoustic modelling supported by advanced materials characterisation from the Henry Royce Institute. This enables accurate simulation of LAMDA’s performance across different scenarios, cutting reliance on physical prototyping and guiding product optimisation.

This project uses the Materials 4.0 principles set out in Royce's “National Materials Innovation Strategy”  to accelerate sustainable materials deployment .

Prof. Horoshenkov said: “This collaboration leverages the mechano-acoustic modelling and characterisation expertise developed at Sheffield to accelerate the route to market of novel sustainable acoustic materials.”

Dr. Xiaomeng Zhang, from Wull Technologies, said: “This partnership allows Wull Technologies to shorten development cycles, de-risk certification, and bring a sustainable alternative to market faster.”
