The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering is celebrating an outstanding set of results in the latest National Student Survey (NSS), with all three of its subject areas rated amongst the best in the UK.
The annual survey, which captures the honest feedback of final-year undergraduates looking back at their university journey, has positioned each of the School’s three disciplines at the top of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities:
- Aerospace Engineering has been ranked number one in the Russell Group.
- Mechanical Engineering has also secured the number one spot in the Russell Group.
- Civil Engineering has been rated in the top five of the Russell Group.
These results highlight the high quality of teaching, academic support, and resources provided across the School, as well as the strong partnership between staff and the student body.
Mechanical and Aerospace being ranked number one in the Russell Group, alongside Civil firmly in the top five, is a brilliant achievement for our School. It really highlights the strength of engineering here in Sheffield. Results like this don’t happen by accident; they are down to the brilliance and daily dedication of our staff and the talent of our students. Our focus now is simply on keeping these standards high and continuing to send great engineers out into industry.

Dr Keith Tarnowski, School Director of Education, added: "Our teaching and support teams put a massive amount of effort into our courses so it's great to see that recognised. Getting an engineering degree is hard work, and our main focus is always making sure students feel supported from their very first week right through to graduation. We want them to leave Sheffield not just with the theory, but also the skills they need to become the engineers and leaders of the future. Knowing that this year's graduating students felt we got that balance right means a lot to everyone here."
Success across the University
The Faculty’s success mirrors a positive result for the University of Sheffield as a whole, which continues to be a Russell Group leader for student experience.
In the latest survey Sheffield was rated number one in the Russell Group for ‘student voice’ confirming that students feel their feedback is genuinely listened to and acted upon by the University. The University of Sheffield Students’ Union was also once again named the best Students’ Union in the Russell Group, highlighting the vibrant community and support available to students outside of their studies.
The results follow the University of Sheffield strengthening its top 100 global standing with a 10-place rise in QS World University Rankings 2027 last month, as well as being recognised as one of the world's most international universities by Times Higher Education earlier this year
