After completing study at her home university Qiuyi Yue continued on to study with us at the University of Sheffield to specialise in the field of Corporate and Commercial Law.
Law student

I chose the extended LLM Corporate and Commercial Law course as there is a cooperative programme between my home university and The University of Sheffield. I was taught by lectures from Sheffield School of Law before I came here, and I was impressed by the quality of teaching.

The extended programme gives students one more year than most LLM courses to adapt to a new environment, to learn more law of a different jurisdiction and to know the culture better.

Outstanding Course Structure

The structure of this course simultaneously covers undergraduate modules, language modules and postgraduate modules. As an international student, the theoretical basis of common law and English academic writing skills are poor. This course structure offered me a solid foundation of English contract law, tort law and remedies, which are necessary to well understand and critically evaluate the English law and to do comparative legal study. Meanwhile, there are more opportunities to train critical thinking and academic writing skills, which is much helpful for me, as I want to do academic work in the future.

A Student Centred Experience

The staff are student-centric and are always ready to help you. The emails always end with ‘if you have any questions, please ask’. I am encouraged to express my own views and guided to make a small idea become a big and convincing argument.

The course is well-structured. This course is perfect for the students with no common law background. Moreover, the modules consist of lectures and seminars, where you can have extensive discussion with your colleagues and tutors.

Use the materials you have

The advice I would give to students on the LLM is to do the reading before lectures and seminars. Read more and think deeply. The reading list and module outline are quite helpful to understand the basic knowledge and enlighten your own idea.  By doing so, the discussion with your colleagues and tutors will be more efficient.

We are International

I feel I am welcome at The University of Sheffield and it is like my second home. Both the students and staff are patient and are willing to help you. There are many international students from different countries, so it is easy to talk with them and know different cultures.

After her current period of study Qiuyi Yue plans to continue with The University of Sheffield and complete a PhD.
