Languages for All

Our Japanese modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.

Available on an academic year or semester basis, they aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.

Levels

We offer Japanese language modules at three different levels: Beginner, Post-beginner and Intermediate. Find out about the modules we offer and choose the course that's right for you. 

If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.

Beginner

Choose this level if you have no previous experience of learning the language.

• Academic year: LAS1140 Japanese 1 (20 credits)
• Autumn: LAS129 Japanese for Non-Specialists 1 (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS130 Japanese for Non-Specialists 2 (10 credits)

Post-beginner

You have some basic experience of learning the language and aren't a complete beginner.

• Autumn: LAS241 Japanese for Non-Specialists 3 (10 credits)
• Spring: LAS242 Japanese for Non-Specialists 4 (10 credits)

Intermediate

You have studied the language for one to two years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good GCSE, and can interact with 'friendly' native speakers in common, expected situations.

• Spring: LAS336 Japanese for Non-Specialists 6 (10 credits)

Degrees with Japanese

Undergraduate students who take a Japanese specialism as part of their degree with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies will take the following modules.

The language modules are intended to build your proficiency in Japanese over the years, taking into account any previous experience of the language you may have, whilst supporting your study of Japanese culture in other modules. 

Year 1

• Spring: LAS148 Japanese Intensive 1b (20 credits)
• Academic year: LAS1130 Japanese Intensive 1c (20 credits)

Year 2

Autumn:

• LAS262 Japanese Language 3A (20 credits)
• LAS243 Japanese Language 3B (10 credits)

Spring:

• LAS263 Japanese Language 4A (20 credits)
• LAS244 Japanese Language 4B (10 credits)

Year 3

• Autumn: LAS351 Japanese Language 5 (20 credits)
