Ranking and reputation

Formed in 2025 as the result of a merger between the Information School and the School of Journalism, Media and Communication, the School of Information, Journalism and Communication has an impressive academic reputation.

Both of these founding schools are world-leading in their fields. The Information School was the UK’s first iSchool and has been at the forefront of developments in the information field for more than 50 years. The University of Sheffield is one of the few Russell Group universities offering NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) accredited journalism degrees.

We have been ranked number one in the world for Library and Information Management in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. This is the fifth year in a row that we have achieved this accolade - a fantastic recognition of the outstanding teaching that our students enjoy.

Our BA Journalism Studies was ranked 1st in the Russell Group for teaching on my course, learning opportunities, academic support and student voice, according to recent graduates in the National Student Survey 2024.

We have also been ranked 3rd in the UK for communication and media studies, according to the Complete University Guide 2025
