Urban design studio

Skills development

Learning in our dedicated design studio and immersive design studio, students develop practical skills and knowledge of applied urban design through exposure to technical design, state-of-the-art technologies including virtual reality and augmented reality and training in professional design software like Adobe Creative Cloud and CAD.

Through design studio learning and teaching, students are equipped with technical urban design skills and methods that enable them to produce and deliver critical urban analysis, creative design development and comprehensive design proposals for real-world sites at multiple scales – from site level to masterplans.

The studio facility enables students to explore, test and produce professional visualisations of their design ideas and solutions.

Facilities

The Urban Design Studio is supported by a range of drawing and 3D model-making facilities, including large format maps, professional drawing equipment, scale rulers, modelling clay, 3D printers, specialist design software, larger format printing facilities and new and emerging technologies.

Students benefit from our dedicated equipment to help explore, analyse and design urban environments as well as to create massing models and print/plotting facilities to present work professionally.

Teaching

Our studio enables urban design teaching staff to offer students an applied approach to urban design and planning required by leading consultants and city authorities around the world.

Studio-based learning and teaching prioritises portfolio development with a range of coursework assessment methods and types that enable students to produce a professional design portfolio on completion of their programme. This helps them to demonstrate their analysis, technical drawing and design skills to prospective employers.
