Why did you choose to study in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield?
Sheffield is one of the best departments for urban planning in the UK, with a good reputation and high-quality teaching.
What is your most memorable thing from Sheffield?
The most memorable thing is cooperating with my classmates from different countries to complete the group work and learning about diverse cultures.
Where do you study now as a PhD student?
I came back to Sheffield in 2018 to start my PhD research under the supervision of Professor Rowland Atkinson and Dr. Ally Lu. My research topic is gated communities in China, which seeks to understand the impact of private commodity housing estates and society, and the resulting urban segregation and class changes in Chinese cities more broadly.
Which elements of your PhD do you most enjoy?
Reading new books and articles relevant to my thesis topic and research interest.
How did your studies at Sheffield prepare you for your PhD study?
I have gained lots of study skills and critical thinking and have become more accustomed to the university systems in the UK during my postgraduate process. I also got to know many good teachers and friends who helped me a lot in my PhD study.
What would be your advice to other international students considering studying in Sheffield?
Study hard, make more friends and enjoy your life at the University. This will definitely be one of the most shining moments in your life.
