- Profile
-
After completing my BSc (Honours) and MSc in Geography, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS in India, I moved to the UK and obtained a second MSc in River Basin Dynamics and Management with GIS at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2018. I then returned to India and joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur as a Junior Research Fellow.
In 2020, I was awarded the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship to pursue my PhD at the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST), University of Lausanne, Switzerland, where I joined Professor Stuart Lane’s AlpWISE research group. My PhD research, titled Influence of Climate Change on Water Resources in Alpine and Himalayan River Basins Using Tree Rings and Stable Isotope Analyses, investigated long-term hydrological variability and reconstructed river flow over the past century.
I completed my PhD in 2024 and subsequently joined the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working with Professor David Hannah on the NERC-funded ‘The Big Thaw’ project. My research focused on mountain hydrology and the impacts of environmental change on water resources. I am currently a Research Associate in the School of Geography and Planning at the University of Sheffield, where I combine teaching and student support with research into high-altitude and cryospheric environments, including Greenland runoff monitoring using passive seismic techniques.
Alongside my research and teaching, I have actively contributed to the international geoscience community through the European Geosciences Union (EGU), serving as Early Career Scientist Representative for the Climate Division from 2021 to 2024 and as Early Career Scientist Co-Representative from 2024 to 2026. During my PhD at the University of Lausanne, I also hosted the institute’s weekly seminar series. Previously, at the University of Leeds, I served as a student representative and International Students Ambassador.
- Research interests
-
My research focuses on improving our understanding of hydrological processes and reconstructing hazards in high-altitude environments using novel low-cost sensor techniques (e.g., lidars, trail-cameras), environmental tracers (e.g., stable isotopes) and proxy-records (e.g., tree rings). I am particularly interested in the interactions between glacier retreat and water dynamics for better estimation of available freshwater resources and mitigating water-related risks in the data-sparse regions across the globe. I am also keen to promote citizen science initiatives through active participation of indigenous communities living in remote areas for developing polices related to glacier preservations and sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Current research:
Greenland Runoff Monitoring from Passive Seismology (GRuMPS):
My current research focuses on Greenland Ice Sheet hydrology and the use of passive seismic monitoring to measure meltwater runoff. Through the Greenland Runoff Monitoring from Passive Seismology (GRuMPS) project, I explore how low-cost seismic sensors can provide continuous, near-real-time measurements of runoff from glacier catchments, including marine-terminating glaciers. This research aims to improve our understanding of ice-sheet hydrology, sea-level rise, and the potential role of meltwater runoff in triggering climate tipping points, contributing to improved monitoring and early-warning capabilities.
