MA Urban Design and Planning
MA Urban Design and Planning alumni Maisie, shares experiences of how the course gives you strong urban design skills, the importance of collaboration and communication & career progression on to a role as a Graduate Town Planner.

Why did you choose to study this course at the University of Sheffield?
I completed my undergraduate degree in Geography and Planning at Sheffield and loved every aspect of my time there, from the quality of the lectures to the sports and social life. After three incredible years, I realised there was still so much more I wanted to explore within the field, particularly the areas I was most passionate about. That’s what led me to stay on and study the Urban Design and Planning MA, and it was the best decision I made.
The course was dynamic, hands-on, and collaborative. While a lot of the work was individual, we were constantly working in teams, learning how to share ideas and problem-solve collectively. The lecturers were inspiring, and the course truly prepared me for the realities of working in the planning and design industry.

What are your favourite parts of the course so far? (any particular modules etc)
The Masterplanning module really stood out for me. It was engaging, practical, and full of activities that encouraged creative thinking and teamwork. It was the kind of lecture you didn’t want to miss! I also loved working in the Urban Design Studio, where I learnt an incredible amount in a short space of time. The combination of technical skills, creativity, and collaboration made the experience really rewarding.

What do you want to do after you finish your course?
I’ve now completed my MA and am working in Cambridge as a Graduate Town Planner at Stantec, where I’ve been for almost a year. I’m really enjoying the role and the variety of projects I get to work on.
I’ve also been selected to join the Young Advisory Committee for Cambridge Ahead, which is an amazing opportunity to work alongside other young professionals and the local council to help shape policy. It’s fascinating to see how ideas evolve into real concepts and eventually become part of the built environment.

How do you think your course will prepare you for a job in the future?
The MA gave me invaluable experience in working as part of a team, something I now do every day in my role. It also helped me develop strong urban design skills, from using specialist software to thinking critically about design choices. These skills are embedded in my day-to-day work, and I wouldn’t be where I am now without the foundation Sheffield gave me.

What skills do you think you have learned from the course/uni experience which will help you in the future?
Alongside technical and software skills, the course taught me the importance of collaboration, communication, and creative problem-solving. I learned how to listen to different perspectives and combine ideas to produce better outcomes. Sheffield completely changed the way I view the built environment. I can’t walk through a city now without noticing the design choices that shape how we experience spaces. Studying Urban Design and Planning gave me a lasting appreciation for the power of good design and well-executed planning. Now, working in the industry, I’m gaining first-hand experience in turning ideas into real places. I get to contribute to projects that balance functionality, aesthetics, and community needs, and my passion for this wouldn’t be as strong without my time at Sheffield.

Do you have any tips for students looking to study here?
If you’re considering the course, go for it! You won’t regret it. It’s a chance to learn from brilliant lecturers, gain practical skills, and meet incredible people from all over the world. My time at Sheffield was truly unforgettable, both academically and socially.
