Lucy Keeling is a trained teacher now working as a Literacy Advisor at All Aboard Learning on a phonics scheme, where she specialises in supporting struggling readers.

I am currently a Literacy Advisor working for All Aboard Learning, who have a phonics scheme ‘All Aboard Phonics’ and specialise in supporting struggling readers via our online reading programme ‘Easyread’.

Primarily, my role involves visiting primary schools using All Aboard Phonics to provide support and training for teachers and teaching staff in how to teach and get results in phonics, managing the marketing and social media for the company and delivering online lessons for children who have struggled to learn to read.

After graduating from Sheffield, I went on to do my PGCE at the University of Cambridge in General Primary Education and began my teaching career in Cambridge with a Year 1 class for two and half years. During this time, I also completed a Masters in Education from the University of Cambridge.

The skills and knowledge that I learned on the BA Education, Childhood and Culture course continues to give me a broad outlook on education, being able to consider perspectives from many different stakeholders and understand theory and research behind educational policy and practice. I am grateful to the Faculty Teaching Team for encouraging me to keep an open mindset and take a critical approach to educational thinking, instilling in me a drive to improve education and outcomes for children, which I am certain will always sit at the heart of my career decisions.

I can’t believe I am now several years on from my time at Sheffield, it truly feels like I was there yesterday and hold memories from my three years at University very dear. To this day, my closest circle of friends are still from my time at Sheffield with get-togethers full of reminiscing of the Dance Society Socials, Classes and Competitions, the best pies from Notty House and our love for the friendliest city in the UK!!

My advice to anyone considering their career or studying at Sheffield is to be open-minded, try lots of new things and say yes to opportunities when they come your way!
