Dr Wilkinson’s research focuses on higher education policy and practice, with interests in teaching excellence, higher education reform, and the impact of marketisation on academic work and student experience. She is particularly committed to questions of equity, inclusion, and widening participation, reflecting a long-standing dedication to social justice in education.
Her work specifically examines the systemic barriers encountered by working-class individuals and other marginalised groups, and how these shape access, participation, and success in higher education.
She also explores relational approaches to teaching and learning, curriculum innovation, and student engagement, drawing on critical theory, narrative inquiry, and arts-based research methods, including critical portraiture methodology.
Her Doctorate in Education (EdD) critically examined the limitations of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in England and its implications for the future of higher education as a public good.
