Who Decides? Democracy, Power and Persuasion
In this session, we'll talk about democracy in theory and practice, looking at how decisions are shaped by inequalities of power, and how some people find it easier than others to get their voice heard. We'll explore this through working together on an everyday scenario introducing themes and teaching methods from the Introduction to the Social Sciences module, designed to be interesting and relevant whatever social science subject you're thinking of studying.
This session will be of interest to anyone interested in our Social Sciences degree pathways
Here be dragons. What does it mean to be human in an ever-changing world?
In this session, we will explore some of the different ways in which people have thought about and depicted their place in the world. We will look at a range of maps and images of the world, from 'ancient times' up to the present day, and from the Americas to China to 'outer space'. As we travel together through space and time, we'll also think about what these different depictions tell us about our changing perceptions of 'what it is to be human'.
This session will be of interest to anyone interested in our Arts and Humanities degree pathways
Genetic Foundations: From Inheritance to Personalised Healthcare
In this session, we will explore the interplay of genetics and environment in shaping human variation. We will decode the secrets of DNA to see how proteins are built, and discover how this knowledge informs healthcare both now and in the future.
This session will be of interest to anyone interested in our Science or Health degree pathways
Staff and students from our Lifelong Learning team will be available throughout the event to answer any questions you have about studying with us.
