We understand that around a fifth of our students choose to live at home, so you are certainly not alone in this experience. From navigating parking and travel logistics to discovering essential on-campus facilities and hearing from students who balance their commute with a full social life, this guide provides everything you need to make the most of your time on campus.

Getting to campus

For students commuting into the city, Sheffield is hard to beat. With an extensive public transport network covering the city centre, suburbs and beyond into South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the Peak District, getting here is straightforward wherever you're travelling from. Sheffield also boasts excellent connections to other major cities

Travelling by train

Sheffield is centrally located in the UK, just 2 hours from London and within an hour of Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham. Our campus is a 25-minute walk from the train station, on the edge of the city centre.

Regional train travel

By bus or tram

As a student, you can benefit from discounted bus and tram travel across Sheffield and South Yorkshire with a Zoom Beyond 18-21 Travel Pass. The University has its own tram stop, and there is a frequent bus route directly outside our Students’ Union.

Local public transport

Travelling by car

We encourage students driving to campus to use one of Sheffield's park and ride sites, all of which are connected to the city's tram network. Several car parks are also available nearby.

You can find information about staff and student car parking – including how to apply for a permit – on our parking pages.

Facilities on campus

At the University of Sheffield we have outstanding study spaces and support. If you are planning to be on campus all day, there is a wide selection of study areas you can use. We have lots of information about these study spaces available to help you plan your day.

The Students’ Union is a fantastic space with lots of facilities to make a long day on campus easier.

Many of our buildings have free shower facilities available to staff and students.

Microwaves

When you commute into university, you may prefer to bring in a packed lunch. We have microwaves available to students to reheat food at several points within the Students' Union. There are also water points dotted around campus to refill water bottles.

Prayer rooms and quiet spaces

Get involved with student life

Take a tour of the SU

Societies and clubs are a great way to meet new people. At Sheffield we have over 350 different clubs and societies so there really is something for everyone. If you aren’t sure what you would want to get involved with, the SU runs give it a go. Our Give it a go scheme gives students an opportunity to try new things and make friends, so you can sample a society before you commit.
