- New UK Energy Research Centre-funded research will look at grassroots tools to reduce domestic energy usage
- The project will work alongside the Sheffield Energy Hub as a model for supporting sustainable energy interventions
The Energy Hub Futures project will look at the use of community hubs as a tool for supporting transitions to sustainable energy.
Led by Jayne Carrick from the School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations, Energy Hub Futures aims to promote low carbon solutions and energy efficiency, addressing issues around fuel poverty, health and wellbeing.
The project is funded by the UK Energy Research Centre, as part of their Whole Systems Networking Fund call, aiming to build new conversations around our future energy system.
The project looks to explore how grassroots initiatives can support communities, where top-down policies and retrofitting plans often take too long to effect change, by exploring the role of a community hub in South Yorkshire.
Launched in 2025, The Sheffield Energy Hub offers information and advice around lowering energy usage, as well as tools such as heat pumps and solar panels. The research will look at how this energy hub model can be supported, developed and scaled in order to bring benefits to wider communities.
