I am an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and an Honorary Registrar in Gastroenterology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals with specialist interests in coeliac disease, disorders of gut–brain interaction and gastrointestinal endoscopy.
I completed my PhD at the University of Sheffield, where my research focused on improving the diagnosis and management of coeliac disease.
I have received national recognition for my research, becoming the first gastroenterologist to be awarded the prestigious Society of Apothecaries’ Prize for his work on the no-biopsy approach to diagnosing coeliac disease. I am also the first trainee to be elected to the British Society of Gastroenterology Council. I am Trainee Editor at the United European Gastroenterology Journal and serves on the Coeliac UK Research Awards Panel.
Alongside my academic work, I remain actively involved in clinical work, teaching and service improvement, with a focus on evidence-based practice and improving patient care.

My research focuses on improving the diagnosis and management of coeliac disease and other gluten-related disorders. I am interested in diagnostic pathways, serological testing, gastrointestinal endoscopy and how evidence can be translated into clinical practice and guidelines. I also study the epidemiology and outcomes of coeliac disease using large routinely collected healthcare datasets. A second area of my research is disorders of gut–brain interaction, particularly irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. My work examines their epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment, with a particular interest in dietary interventions. I also have broader research interests in gastrointestinal endoscopy quality and in evidence synthesis using systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

My teaching interests include gastroenterology, gastrointestinal endoscopy, evidence-based medicine, research methodology and critical appraisal. I am interested in helping medical students and trainees develop practical clinical reasoning skills and confidence in interpreting research evidence. I also have an interest in academic training and research supervision, including systematic reviews, meta-analysis and clinical research methods.

I am involved in delivering the undergraduate (MBChB) Gastroenterology curriculum at the University of Sheffield. I also teach and supervise doctors in clinical practice, endoscopy and research.
I am a JAG-accredited independent upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopist and endoscopy trainer, and contribute to practical endoscopy training at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
I am currently completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching for Learning in Higher Education (PGCertTLHE) at the University of Sheffield, to further develop my approach to teaching, curriculum design and assessment.
