About the course

This course runs over three half days and provides a basic introduction to, and overview of the use of the free statistical software, R, which includes:

  • working with the RStudio interface
  • understanding different types and classes of objects
  • importing data, basic manipulation and summary statistics
  • use of the popular dplyr and ggplot2 packages
  • use of R as a reproducible reporting tool

Who will benefit from the course?

This course is aimed at individuals with little or no experience in R. The course is delivered in tutorial format, with periods of demonstration followed by practical activities and time for questions. Those with previous experience with Excel VBA, STATA, SPSS and other software may find they progress faster than others, but no prior knowledge is expected.

Learning outcomes


After this course you should be able to:

  • know the benefits and limitations of R
  • navigate RStudio
  • import and manipulate different types of data in R
  • write "notebooks" to allow for replication of analysis
  • summarise & plot data,
  • know where to find further information.

The fee for this course is £450 per person.

Current UOS Staff/Students

Current University of Sheffield staff and students are eligible to book at a reduced rate of £380. An active @sheffield.ac.uk email address is required to book at this reduced rate.

Requirements:

  • Reliable and stable internet connection.
