School outreach and activities
Bringing science to life through hands-on experiences of cutting-edge research, designed to inspire the next generation of scientists.
We offer interactive workshops for student groups, as well as lunchtime seminars showcasing current research. Thanks to our wide range of interdisciplinary expertise, the Neuroscience Institute can provide activities for groups of all sizes - from hands-on demonstrations and exhibitions to engaging talks on the latest research.
How it works
- Activities for large groups/classes: 5-8 activities/interactive stations, 50-70 students
- Activities for small groups/classes: 1-4 activities/interactive stations, <30 students
- Lunchtime seminars: 2 short talks, 10 minutes each
- Age/School year: 16-18 years old

Workshops
Our workshops cover a range of topics, from hearing research and disease prevention to new insights into how music may support people living with insomnia. Students can also interact with the social robot “Furhat” and discover how speech recognition works in practice.
We also bring activities to help the students appreciate the complexity of the brain, from understanding the potential of music to help people affected by insomnia, to exploring how brain cells work and fail.
Students will additionally learn why highly sensitive areas of the body, such as the fingertips and lips, occupy more space in the somatosensory cortex than less sensitive regions like the arms or back, through an exploration of the sensory homunculus.
Seminars
Our seminars are short, research-driven talks that give students the opportunity to meet a scientist and learn about cutting-edge research happening in their city. The sessions are flexible and cover a variety of topics, depending on what academics are available and what works best for the school.
