Financial Mathematics is a great choice if you enjoy problem-solving

What made you want to study your course?
I have always been passionate about mathematics. I love its logical structure, the challenge of solving puzzles and the sense of satisfaction when everything clicks into place. At school, maths was easily my favourite subject, I’d often choose to work on problems over revising for other classes.
This degree felt like the perfect fit because it brings together everything I love about maths: problem-solving, abstract thinking and its real-world impact. It allows me to apply analytical skills to tangible challenges, such as managing risks or optimising investments. It’s such a dynamic and fast-moving field, and I can’t wait to see how I can apply what I learn to tackle real challenges and build my future.
What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?
The programming modules have been the highlight for me, they’re challenging but rewarding. I’ve also loved the chance to dive into more advanced maths through problem-solving seminars and extra research projects. It’s been great learning stuff beyond the standard modules and really pushing myself with tricky concepts. The lecturers and teaching assistants are all really helpful and approachable, which has made the whole experience even better!
What skills have you developed during your course?
During my degree so far, I’ve picked up loads of useful skills. Aside, from deepening my understanding of mathematics and learning about financial instruments, I’ve also gained a lot of programming experience. I even learned a new coding language, R, which has been useful for analysing data and solving statistical problems.
A highlight was my project over the summer on dynamical systems, which taught me how to conduct research effectively. I worked with large datasets, used Python to create meaningful plots, and explored new areas of maths beyond the scope of my modules. It was an amazing experience that really pushed me to learn and grow both technically and academically.
