I've developed the ability to view real-world problems from a logical perspective

What made you decide to study at the University of Sheffield?
I went to an online open day and I thought the maths course was well structured. I also have family that live nearby so I was able to come up and visit the campus a few times before making my decision. As a keen cyclist and climber I loved how close it was to the Peak District.
What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?
The things I have enjoyed most about my course so far have been the computer based projects I've completed. I found the third year machine learning projects on handwritten number classification and wine quality prediction particularly interesting, as these projects really highlighted to me the applications of maths and the value of my degree.
What skills have you developed during your course?
During my course I've developed strong problem solving skills and the ability to view real-world problems from a logical perspective. I've also developed software skills in Python, R and other programming languages.
What would you say to a student thinking about studying your course at Sheffield?
I'd say that Sheffield is a great place to study. Although most of the buildings are situated in the city centre, it has a welcoming campus-like feel to it. In particular, the maths building has good facilities and most lecturers are engaging and interesting. The course is also well structured with lots of opportunities to steer your course in different directions.
